What is a CAS number?
A registry identifier, and what it does not tell you.
A unique registry identifier
A CAS Registry Number, or CAS RN, is a unique numerical identifier assigned by Chemical Abstracts Service to a specific chemical substance. Its purpose is unambiguous identification across languages, naming systems and commercial synonyms. A single molecule may be described by a systematic chemical name, a common name, an abbreviation and several trade names. The CAS number provides a stable reference that can link those naming variants to one registered substance.
What the number does not encode
CAS numbers are not generated from molecular structure and the digits do not encode chemical properties. They are assigned identifiers with a check-digit system that helps detect transcription errors. This is important because users sometimes attempt to infer family, molecular weight or sequence from the number itself; that is not how the registry works. The value lies in the association between the identifier and the curated substance record.
Peptide-specific complications
For peptides, CAS identification can be more nuanced than it first appears. The free peptide, an acetate salt, a trifluoroacetate salt, a modified sequence or a stereochemical variant may be treated as distinct substances and may therefore carry different registry entries. A common name can also be used loosely in commercial catalogues. For that reason, a CAS number should be checked against sequence, molecular formula, stereochemistry and chemical form rather than copied from another supplier solely because the product name looks similar.
What CAS does not tell you
A CAS number does not describe quality. It provides no information about chromatographic purity, absolute peptide content, sterility, endotoxin, residual solvent, water content, manufacturing standard, storage history or batch performance. Two vials can legitimately carry the same CAS number while differing substantially in those attributes. The registry identifies what substance is intended, not whether the physical sample conforms to a specification.
How CAS fits into technical records
CAS numbers are nevertheless useful in technical workflows. They help reconcile supplier documentation, safety data sheets, import records, analytical methods and literature searches. Regulatory agencies and chemical databases often use them because they reduce ambiguity created by synonyms. When building a structured product database, the CAS field can therefore act as one component of identity control alongside sequence, molecular formula and molecular weight.
CAS is not regulatory approval
The identifier should also not be treated as evidence of regulatory approval. Assignment of a CAS RN does not mean that a substance has been approved as a medicine, reviewed for safety, cleared for human use or manufactured under a particular quality system. Novel research substances can receive identifiers if they meet registry requirements. Regulatory status must be determined from the relevant jurisdiction's legislation and official registers, not inferred from the existence of a CAS number.
Use CAS as a cross-reference
The most reliable way to use CAS data is to treat it as an identity cross-reference. Confirm that the registry entry corresponds to the exact sequence and chemical form under discussion, preserve the source used for verification, and keep batch-specific quality information in separate fields. Used that way, a CAS number solves a narrow but important problem: it tells researchers which chemical substance a record refers to, while leaving purity, grade, quantity and regulatory status to the analytical and regulatory records that are designed to answer those questions.
